Default Soo which is the fastest mod known to rFactor?

I like to test cars top speed out on the old layout of LeMans and so far the fastest car I've driven is one of the Ferrari 512 prototypes from the CSGT mod that topped out at 223 mph, so has anyone experienced anything faster?

There's a Bugatti Veryon mod out there too (257 MPH on Mulsanne), but the handling is crap, FWIW.

Had a trimmed-out P908 touch 227 on Mulsanne but almost didn't survive the kink, and it wanted to go into orbit over the hump. Not really driveable, but fun for a lap!

The World Land Speed Record Mod that I'm working on right now will at Mach 1+ put all other cars to shame

Of course, it'll also be crap to drive since those cars don't turn worth a damn...

Seriously though, it's not outright top speed that makes a mod worthwhile, in general.

I know, but its fun once in a while just to take a car to a straightaway and see how fast you can get it. It's always fun to see which cars will break the 200-210 mph barrier

Would that be the McLaren F1 Challenge 3.50 on rFactor central?

I've done 238mph in draft w/ a good set-up for the IZOD 2010 Indycars at Indy.
Have clocked 228mph alone.
Also, 233mph alone at Talladega.

The two 917Ls from the CSGT mods should top out at about 237mph--certainly the 5 liter car will (#25).

FWIW (and it was a point debated back and forth within the CSGT mod team), the car should probably have reached 245mph just before the kink, but a widely read book of fairly recent vintage pegs the speed a bit lower it seems, so that's the number that was used.

I do know Vic Elford claimed 245mph at night in the wet (!), but only after several hours of driving let him build up the nerve to try the kink flat out (1970). The the "actual" top speed he reached was derived, I believe, directly through Helmut Bott's slide rule.

I do have the idea 245mph Porsche measured was also confirmed (by timing) in 1970 at the Mulsanne kink speed trap, but I can no longer point at a source for this.

-----

One year later, Jackie Oliver reached 246.XXXmph (measured at that speed trap) driving a further developed 917L. The car by then was stable enough that he said he could drive it through the kink absolutely flat out without lifting at all, and with just one hand on the wheel.

Olivers 246mph was reported as a "Guiness World Record" for quite a few years afterward (in the Guiness books).

-------

Having said that ^ I suspect an "Auto-Union" monster-car mod from the 30's should properly reach speeds of 270mph or more . Might need a longer, "Autobahn" type straight to let it all out though....

Yeah, those old titans were impressive (even by modern standards). Then again, here's a fun fact: when the Formula Vees with their little 60 BHP Beetle engines where getting up to speed at the end of the 1960's,...

...they still went around the Ring faster than most of the Auto Unions and all ye other monsters ever did.

Speed is absolute, but it's also kind of relative.

As mentioned previously, several cars can achieve well over 200MPH. It is important to select a low-downforce configuration (low wing settings) and the longest gears possible in your setup. Those will be the main limiters of the car's top speed.

If you're looking for pure speed and aren't worried about realism or how bad the car model looks, there's a drag racing mod out there where it's possible to reach speeds approaching 500 mph - if you have enough room to do so.

You'll probably need this track to do your test runs on. [Note the track map on said page is incorrect, as this is the high-speed oval, not the so-called "Nurburgring" test track there.]
