Default .plr file changes to .tmp file on its own

I have Windows XP. I recently started playing the game after a year or so of having it sit in a box.
For some reason, when I play, the screen gets all glitchy after a while, and when I restart it doesn't recognize any driver name. When I look at the userdata file, the plr file has changed to a tmp file on its own. Any thoughts on how to fix this from happening?
This did not happen when I played before.

It happened to me but once in a while. Have you tried giving the file its old name and restarted the game?

I thing the system crashed inthe process of saving the game. If you look at your trace file at close the game saves to .tmp then to .PLR ....
