Hi Powershot,

There's always some crackling sound, this happens for the way the sound-engine in ISI powered sims uses the sound-samples to get them activated and then deactivated when another sample substitutes its action, and so on.

...as you have a separate soundcard (not onboard) installed in a PCI slot (XFi Xtreme Music), check if your system has the PCI-Latency in "64".
You can check and change that either by using a PCI-Latency tool or in the BIOS options.

PCI latency usually is by default at "16" or "32" (sometimes even at "0" -zero!!!) and that too is a cause for annoying crackling sound on background with soundcards, like I said, try changing that to "64" and see if it improves (should be almost unoticeable when it's well setup'ed).

hi ducfreak,

i tried it , i set PCI latency in bios to 64 (was set on 32 , the minimum setting )
also downloaded the pci latency tool . set on 64 there now .

not really any difference .still quite loud crackling noise .i tried both games and the cracking noise is only there all through the games intro movies and always when im using the in car view playing the games.
in any other view or in the game menus e.t.c. the sound is perfect

thanks for trying though .

i have been playing using the bonnet cam recently and its fine then , but i used to use the in car view before i built new pc . its just weird how its only on gtr2 and gt legends .on race 07 and all my other games/movies sound is perfect.

thanks again for advice tho ! really appreciate it .

The PCI latency tool only works with older AGP motherboards. If your board has PCI Express, that tool will do nothing for you.

The tool was originally written because AGP video cards were hogging up the PCI bus, causing stuttering and crackling on the soundcards. That issue does not exist in modern PCI-e motherboards. The tool has not been updated in 3 years because of that.

Try installing the latest OpenAL driver and updating your DirectX.

...I got a PCI-E motherboard and it still works for latency on the other PCI slots...

If changing the latency of PCI slots didn't help that's because the problem is somewhere else (too many variants to be sure what it is), reinstalling DirectX is good advice alright, didn't know about OpenAl (???), who knows could be another solution.

If you're running it on Vista, then yes it does. In Vista, the HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) was changed. DirectX sound and EAX effects are no longer supported. Vista uses OpenAL instead. Games that use DirectX sound or EAX still work, though some need the help of Creative's Alchemy program to "replicate" EAX in OpenAL.

The OP did not state which OS he was using so I suggested updating both DirectX and OpenAL

Can't hurt no matter which OS

i updated direct x , still the same . im not sure about or how uninstall then re-install directx.
i have pci express motherboard and changed the pci latency in the bios . the pci tool shows it set at 64.
OTHER SPECS ARE -
WINDOWS XP HOME
EVGA NVIDIA 8800GT KO EDITION
4 OCZ GB DDR2 RAM
INTEL CORE2DUO E6750.

also all drivers e.t.c. are up to date.

not to worry though as im fine using the bonnet view with my momo wheel .game plays like a dream.it is bugging me though as its probably something so simple . lol. i may try a fresh install of windows soon , but im in the middle of a couple of games at the moment so would rather complete them first.
when its done i will let you all know if it gets sorted.

thanks all again for trying to help.

I am having the same problems with my GTR2. It has gotten so bad it now sounds like my sound is under water with the crackling sound still there. Isn't there some global file for the game that i can try to replace with the original? I was able to put up with it until it got so bad today I am now thinking about reinstalling the game. This would be a real pain because I have alot of mods and cars.

i done a clean install of windows . (backed up my gtr2 add on tracks e.t.c. )
still the same noisey crackling noise.
im sure its the windows xp drivers for my soundcard - creative hi-fi extreme music SB0670
i have vista on one harddrive and windows xp home on other harddrive ,i just choose which to boot from in bios .but i still use xp 99% of the time as i find it much better for gaming
the vista drivers work fine as i installed gtr2 on vista .
but with windows xp drivers the crackling noise is still there . quite loud .

That is certainly very odd, could even be faulty card, speakers... I don't know.

...try this old trick just for me...

Go to "...Start\Run", now type "dxdiag" (without the quote marks) and hit enter...

...click "yes" (and wait a couple of seconds), then go to "sounds" (wait another couple of seconds)... now in the hardware acceleration slide bar, get that to the minimum... run the game and see if it's still the same.

tried that before .i have since gave up and am using my onboard sound now . as gtr2 is my main game.
i uninstalled the creative Sound Blaster X-Fi extreme music card and installed onboard realtek drivers .fortunately my m.board has full hd audio so is quite good .
i read through the creative forums and other online forums and found there are hundreds and hundreds of people having problems with creative xi-fi xp drivers.but as i said it works perfectly on vista.

see following link - http://forums.creative.com/creativel...hread.id=71962

bit fed up with messing around really . been here ages re-installing all my stuff . lol.

i tried different drivers and even their latest beta drivers but still had crackling sound after reading the above link and seeing how many people have problems like me i wont be buying from creative again thats for sure .

i will be fine with onboard sound .

thanks again for trying to help .

Do you have any mods installed? This started happening to me after I installed some mods. I just don't remember which one. Too many months in crunch mode with work! I think I am going to install the game to another location and see if I still have the same problem without any mods if not I will let you know. If this is the problem I will start uninstalling mods till I find the correct one that started this. I still would like to find out what the global file is for the sound is for the game.
