Default Absolute Basics

Hi All,

I've just upgraded to a new home PC, the idea being to use it for editing films about the historic motorsport events a group of us go to.
(We're part of a club for owners of classic 911s, went to Classic Le Mans this year - check out some rushes from a forthcoming film I'm working on about the club's trip, if you're interested: http://www.youtube.com/view_play_lis...BEBACFF5F9147A)

Anyway, waffle waffle.. of course I made the mistake of buying GTL at same time as the PC... I bet you can guess just how much of the editing has got done, thanks to just "a quick game of GTL" here and there!

I just wanted to say how majorly impressed I am by it. This game is going to take over my life (outside of work, of course... I'm not posting from work now, no, honest!)

I can't believe I've been fooling around with Gran Turismo etc for years.
When I used to play REVs on my BBCMicro way back in the day, I just knew the PC would one day bring me a sim like this.

Anyway, I'm still waffling! I am so glad to find that there are forums such as this - on initial viewing it looks as indispensable to GTL fans as is our forum for early 911 owners: http://www.ddk-online.com/phpBB2/index.php

And this is where I admit to being a bit lost. Loving the look of all the skins and cars and tracks to add on but, despite my best attempts at searching, I can't find an idiots guide to installing and using these things! Would someone point me to a thread, or else let me know? I'm itching to try some of those 911 skins... and to race at Le Mans, Nurburgring and Spa in their proper early incarnations!

Thanks and congrats on a great forum,

james (23e Heure)

Hi James!

I'm sure the "graphic" side of things is great, but if you really want to completely surrender your soul to GTL, go racing on a Sunday in the NoGrip league!

Thank you so much for reminding me of the original game that got me into computer racing - REVs! Oh, the memories! 1986 it was published!!! :roflmao:

Not only has GTL brought you "a sim like this" it has brought you it in the internet age where a multiplayer game is (usually - there are bugs) just a few clicks away.

Check out http://www.nogripracing.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4426 which is the thread for this Sunday's race. The watchword, sorry, watchphrase is "competitive gentlemanly sportsmanship"

You might not think you are up to it, and sure the laptimes are competitive. but if you've been racing on computer since REVs, then you have the spirit.

Come along, keep out of people's way in qualifying, discover you're just as fast as a couple of other racers.

Finish the race 9th of 10. Next week go for 8th and knock off that guy you nearly caught this time if you hadn't spun on the second last lap!

It brings out the fanatic in you!

It's a friendly bunch and the fun is a level up on anything AI or public servers can offer.

Thanks for the welcome.

I am definitely up for those Sunday League races - not this weekend unfortunately, as BT are having 'issues' with my broadband connection.
I'll sign up just as soon as that's sorted, and I promise judicious use of my mirrors to ensure I'm out of the way when blue flagged
REVs, eh? Actually I think I was playing that even before 86 - the BBC version was 1984 I think - I remember the cramps I got in my fingers from hours on that unergonomical BBC keyboard!

Meanwhile, is anybody able to give me link to an idiots guide for installing new tracks, cars and skins etc?

See you on the grid then, in a couple of Sunday's time!

Cars and Skins - I have no idea.

Tracks - piece of cake - unzip the file and move the extracted track folder to the "Locations" folder in Program Files\GTL

Some tracks may have subfolders for different versions of the track, but generally it's pretty clear what the correct folder to move is.

Yep, I've only managed to have 1 sunday race with nogrip and 1 friday race with the interleague challenge but it is very very rewarding in most part because of the conduct of the drivers.

I started off with Chequered Flag on the spectrum from about the same time as Revs on the BBC. From there to Grand Prix on the Amiga (I was unbeatable then, no really) and then onto Grand Prix Legends with my 450mhz Amd K6/2 PC, 20fps max and just playable. From there to GTL (GTR was a brief fling before that).
